'Seeing Jewish Life' tours: These are half-day or full-day programmes that we plan for non-Jewish pupils to support their learning of Judaism in RE. They come to London and get to experience Judaism first-hand by visiting a synagogue, going for a Kosher lunch, exploring the shops around Golders Green or Edgware, maybe visiting a Jewish school or daycentre, or hearing a testimony from a Holocaust survivor. I have a team of wonderful volunteers who guide these days for me -- and often the most beneficial part of the day for the students is the chance to ask these guides questions about their Jewish life. These tours are also now being run in Manchester through the Manchester Jewish Museum.
Become a Jewish representative on a SACRE: There are 152 SACREs (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education) across the country and each is responsible for devising and maintaining a Locally Agreed Syllabus for their area. Each SACRE is made up of representatives of the major faith groups as well as teachers and local authority employees. It is vital that the Jewish community is represented on every SACRE to ensure that Judaism is taught in the schools in that area -- and to make sure that it is taught accurately and appropriately. Being a Jewish representative on a SACRE requires minimal commitment, they usually meet 3 or 4 times a year, but it is a great way to make a real difference in the way that our religion is understood in schools across the UK.
If you might be interested in helping out either with the 'Seeing Jewish Life' tours or as SACRE representatives, please be in touch with Hannah Ashleigh on 020 7543 5409 / hannah.ashleigh@bod.org.uk

Jewish Volunteering Network
The concept of the Jewish Volunteer Network, JVN, started when one of the founding members decided she had spare time on her hands and would like to volunteer but did not know where to start. It occurred to her how much easier it would be to have a portal where all Jewish charities could promote their vacancies. Since its inception JVN has grown into a source of information for charities and volunteers alike and actively promotes volunteering in the Jewish community.
JVN is a national charity connecting people across the community. We work across the voluntary, public and private sectors to raise the profile of volunteering within the Jewish community. Our highly developed website helps volunteers find suitable opportunities and our telephone helpline offers a bespoke matching service for specific projects.
Whether you choose to give one hour a week to a local organisation, one month contributing to a national campaign or go volunteering abroad, JVN matches volunteers with the right opportunities to fit their interests and skills. We are proud to have hundreds of charities in our network offering roles as varied as delivering meals, putting on pantomimes, making food parcels, writing websites as well as administration, hands on social welfare projects and fundraising.
Our Vision is: - To be the one-stop-shop for Jewish Volunteering in the UK
Our aims are to:-
Bring volunteers and volunteering opportunities together
Support charitable organisations who serve the Jewish community
Provide added value to individuals & organisations around all aspects of volunteering
Offer training & networking programmes that promote & value volunteering
Provide the user friendly & effective website for Jewish volunteers & volunteer opportunities across the community
JVN has many opportunities with diverse organisations and we also need help developing our own charity, with opportunities to drive a fundraising strategy, marketing ideas and events management.
If you would like to phone or email JVN please contact us at the Jewish Social Action Hub, Haskell House, 152 West End Lane, London NW6 1SD, tel. 020 7443 5100 / info@jvn.org.uk.

Jewish Women: Looking Backwards ... Looking Forward by Rosalind Preston OBE
Since the 1994 publication of the "Women in the Jewish Community" report, we have moved into a new century and have a new generation of Jewish men and women participating in all areas of community life. Over the intervening years I have frequently been asked: what happened to your report and the recommendations it contained? So I have begun the search for some answers. And I need your help. This is a call to men and women from all parts of the community to give their views.
