Biography
Richard Balfour-Lynn studied at the City of London Business School for four years, before forming Warwick Balfour Properties in 1982 - a commercial and residential property development and investment company that operated in established and growth areas of central London.
As well as being Chief Executive and a founding shareholder of MWB Group Holdings plc, Richard is also Chief Executive and a major shareholder of the Alternative Hotel Group (AHG), a private company which, in partnership with Bank of Scotland, acquired Initial Style Conferences in 2005 - the UK's largest residential training and conference business. In 2006 he led a group of partners to purchase De Vere, a major UK public listed hotel company. This company currently comprises 11 four and five star golf resort hotels, 26 Village hotels and leisure clubs, the Greens health and fitness club chain and the distiller and bottler G&J Greenall - producer of Bombay Sapphire and other major white spirits since 1761. Both acquisitions are now amalgamated under the De Vere Group brand.
In January 2010 the De Vere Group launched the De Vere Academy of Hospitality, the first of its kind in the UK. This is a partnership between the Government's National Apprenticeship Service and De Vere, with a commitment to train 10,000 young people for the hotel and leisure industry within three years. The target is for 70% of students to achieve full-time employment within the sector after completing their vocational training. The Academy launched its third site in November 2010, with two further openings planned in the next three months.
Together, MWB and De Vere Group employ about 15,000 people and everyone is encouraged to participate in the partnership with the Variety Club Children's Charity. Within 15 months over £1 million has been raised and the hotel's many facilities been given free to disadvantaged children, their parents and carers.
