Summer Tour programmes are not all about touring. Most Youth Movements add a short volunteer element to their programmes in order to let their participants play a small part in giving something to Israel whilst gaining so much from the experience of touring the land.
The past week has seen three summer tour groups from the UK volunteer in UJIA's partnered region, the Galil in northern Israel. During the summer when Israeli children are on their 'chofesh hagadol' or 'big holiday' many of them find themselves in kaytenot (summer camps).
The community centre in the town of Shlomi and the absorption centre in the town of Nahariya both organise summer camps for the local children. When the Noam and Maccabi GB Youth Movements approached UJIA to ask how they could make some kind of impact in our partnered region UJIA was able to arrange for the two Noam groups and the Maccabi GB group to each spend a day in one of these summer camps, running activities and games in for the local children.
Not only were the activities fun and dynamic but they were also run in English which was an added bonus for the Israeli children as it gave them an opportunity to use the English they learn in school, outside of the classroom and with native English speakers.
