UJIA's investment in young people and education was once again apparent when Andrew Davis, Head of Jewish Studies at Yavneh College and Howard Cohen, former Head of Jewish Studies at King Solomon High School, received their Rabbinic ordination certificates (semicha certificates) at the Kotel (Western Wall) in Jerusalem, Israel.
They can be seen here pictured with their tutor, Michael Pollak and Rabbi Daniel Channan.
Andrew and Howard, two of the young rising stars in Anglo Jewish education, received UJIA bursaries to study for this qualification. Howard is a recent graduate of the UJIA Ashdown Fellowship programme and Andrew is one of this year's intake.
"UJIA has always believed passionately in investing in teachers," said Alastair Falk, UJIA Director of Educational Leadership. "Andrew and Howard's success, the result of hundreds of hours of intensive studies on top of their demanding teaching commitments, should be warmly applauded. It is an important demonstration of the need for continuing professional development of Jewish Studies teachers, as highlighted by the recent Commission on Jewish Schools' report."
UJIA now looks forward to playing an increasingly prominent role in helping Jewish Studies teachers in all Jewish schools develop both personally and professionally.
