The UK delegation at the General Assembly of the United Jewish Communities, the central agency for the Federations of North America, held this year in Jerusalem in honour of Israel 60, visited the Galil for a day in November to see the impact of the UK Jewish community on the region through UJIA.
The group visited the Western Galilee Campus, the temporary site for the Shlomi High School as well as the site where it will be located, the new Shlomi Early Childhood Centre, the Cochav Centre and Kibbutz Eshbal.
Participants' Reflections on the UJIA Day in the Galil
We met young people who have been empowered by the UJIA's people to people programmes in a life changing way. These same young people many with highly challenging home lives have become the future ambassadors of their region. Their pride, enthusiasm and motivation now shines out not only to their friends and neighbours in the Galil but also to the Jewish Community of Great Britain with whom real relationships have developed. Melvin Berwald, Chair, P2K, UJIA/Jewish Agency
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Galil on behalf of the UK Jewish Community. The work that the UJIA and other partners are doing in the Galil is exceptional. Although I only got a chance to visit a small portion of the affected community, it is obvious that the development work taking place is of an outstanding quality that is having meaningful impact on the day to day life of Galil citizens and for the long-term future of the region as a whole. Sam Cohen, The Jewish Leadership Council
What an interesting day we spend with the UJIA visiting the amazing projects around the Galil. It was wonderful to begin to understand some of the important work that is taking place in this area. Susan Grant, Vice-Chair, Jewish Care
It was great to see the impact that UJIA support has on all the communities of the Galil. These UJIA led programmes are a fantastic model of the kinds of partnerships that make a real and direct difference to young people's lives. Jon Landsman, Development Director, UK Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro
A really informative day which showed that UJIA are building not just infra-structure but for a fairer and better Israel. Simon Morris, Chief Executive, Jewish Care
It was a privilege to see the contribution that British Jewry is making to the Galil through the UJIA. It was particularly meaningful to hear directly from those people whose lives have been touched by the projects that we visited. It was striking to see the powerful impact that the strategic agenda of UJIA is delivering in the region. Our community can take genuine pride in what has been achieved. Jeremy Newmark, Chief Executive, The Jewish Leadership Council
So many things to be inspired by and proud of! Anthony Warrens, Chair of UK Programme Executive, Trustee, UJIA
