UJIA brings MA in Jewish education to Manchester

An exciting new course is now being offered to teachers of Jewish Studies in Manchester. The MA in Jewish Education: from Theory to Practice was devised by UJIA in conjunction with the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS) and will be delivered through a combination of face to face seminars with online material, with sessions taking place on a regular basis in King David High School at hours to suit teaching staff.

The 2 year course will be co-ordinated by Michael Pollak, a Teaching Fellow at LSJS and also Texts and Values Consultant to UJIA's Jewish Life Education Centre (JLEC). Professional educational issues will be co-ordinated by Alastair Falk, ex Head teacher and UJIA's Director of Educational Leadership. There will be guest lecturers from Israel and from Yeshiva University's Azrieli Institute of Jewish Education, and there will be an opportunity to take a component in Israel learning.

The course is open to students without traditional qualifications and relevant prior experience or learning may mean it is not necessary to hold a first degree. It is available to both primary and secondary school teachers.

An initial "taster session" was held on Tuesday afternoon at King David High School and was attended by a group of enthusiastic candidates, all of whom are keen to enrol on the course.

Sally Halon, Manchester UJIA's UK Programme Director said "We are thrilled that UJIA and LSJS have decided to bring this course to Manchester to enable our Jewish Studies teachers to continue their professional development. UJIA is behind the on-going enhancement of Jewish Studies in the classroom and this initiative can only benefit both teachers and pupils in our Jewish schools."
