My memories of birthright

Taglit-Birthright Israel is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those aged 21-26 (20-26 for students) who have never been on an organised programme in Israel. Explore the ancient. Experience the contemporary. See Israel on a dynamic group educational programme unlike any other.

But don't take our word for it...David Finn has just returned and the programme has such a profound impact on him, he penned a poem.

I was naïve

I was naïve towards a country, I now consider my own

A place so distant from me, I thought id never call home,

I was naïve towards the fallen, towards the soldiers that continue to fight

For I would be none the wiser, if it wasn't for birthright,

I was naïve towards the politics, the Jewish state, constantly tested and put on trial

For our existence there is rightful, it's our homeland, I was in denial,

I was naïve towards the wall, for which I now know is a fence

Disappointed in myself, for believing the reports of bricks and cement,

I was naïve, as I hadn't walked the expanses of the land

I hadn't seen the ancient ruins and modern cities in first hand,

I was naïve even more than I thought I could be

Walking around lost, looking for my identity,

I was naïve not to call myself a son of the land

For I now know that my journey has just begun

I now believe

David Finn, Age 20. Birthright 2009 (BRUK 3)
