UJIA JAMS (Jewish activities for mainstream schools) engages with Jewish young people within the mainstream school system by supporting the formation and operation of Jewish Societies (JSocs). Together with the J-Socs, UJIA JAMS provides speakers and innovative educational resources for morning assemblies and lunch time gatherings/activities. This is a key programme for young people delivered by UJIA.
The UJIA JAMS Launch event took place on Sunday 6th September 2009 at the new UJIA headquarters in Camden Town. The event allowed past and present J-Soc chairs, from all London regions, the opportunity to meet with one another and share ideas. 50 young volunteer leaders attended the event.
The day was based around Leadership Development. The first part of the day was to give J-Socs the opportunity to learn and develop essential skills needed to run their school's Jewish Society.
The second part of the day saw a panel of speakers consisting of UJIA Chief Executive, Douglas Krikler, Director of UJIA's Jewish Life Education Centre Shelley Marsh and Lay Leaders Michael Goldstein and Gila Sacks. They had been invited to speak on the discussion topic: Lead Now: The role of individual responsibility in Jewish Leadership.
Each member of the panel was given the opportunity to speak for up to 5 minutes on their personal encounters and life experiences, reflecting on their role as leaders of the community. This was followed by a question and answers discussion.
J-Soc chairs also had the opportunity to meet with members of the panel. The day concluded with dinner.
