On Wednesday, third day Chol Hamoed Succot, Manchester Grammar School thanks to Manchester UJIA JAMS hosted their very own Succah and Lulav and Etrog shaking in the quad!
At the request of the boys, Rabbi Shmuli Brown, of Lubavitch South Manchester, ran the lunchtime JSoc bringing with him various forms of Lulavim and Etrogim. He initiated the session by introducing the boys to the Lulav and Etrog and explaining the mitzvah of Succot.
Rabbi Shmuli allowed the boys to pull apart a Lulav to see what it felt like, as well as cutting up an Etrog and passing it around. He also handed out Hadassim (myrtle leaves), to all the boys and told them to crush them in order to make a sweet smelling spice, commonly used for Havdala.
Following these activities, Rabbi Shmuli took the boys out to the quad where he had a Sukkah set up on a trailer! This turned many heads and drew many questions from passing boys. Importantly it enabled the boys to fulfil the Mitzvah of entering the Succah and shaking the Lulav and Etrog.
Sarah Brodie, UJIA JAMS coordinator, said 'it was a very enjoyable session and the boys responded well to the practical aspect of it. Rabbi Shmuli really educated the boys as well as providing the opportunity to fulfil the various Mitzvot. The boys were eager to fulfil the mitzvah of shaking the lulav and etrog and it was rewarding to know that we carried this session out actually on the festival of Succot. UJIA JAMS hopes to carry out more practical lunchtime sessions and assemblies like this in the future.'
Manchester UJIA JAMS also held a similar lunchtime JSoc in Cheadle Hulme on Tuesday 6 October, second day Chol Hamoed. This was run by Mr Dov Ber Klyne and there was singing and dancing in the Succah as well as opportunities to fulfil the various mitzvot.
