Bacon Bagel sparks a debate

Over 50 young Jewish media professionals flocked to Camden Town to take part in the Bacon Bagel Debate hosted by Young UJIA's Jewish Media Network (JMN) on Wednesday 13 April. The panel featured writer, Jonathan Margolis, and legal correspondent, Joshua Rozenberg and was chaired by former Jewish Chronicle editor, David Rowan.

The event hosted by UJIA was inspired by Margolis' controversial article in the Guardian last November, Not Jewish or Jew-ish?, which featured a photograph of the writer eating a bacon-filled bagel outside the Carmelli Bakery in Golders Green. To read the article click here.

Young professionals working in newspapers, television, film, radio and PR came to hear the panellists debate what it means to be Jewish in contemporary Britain, not to mention Margolis' unorthodox taste in sandwiches.

Emma Barnett, co-chair, Young UJIA Jewish Media Network Committee, said:

"The Great Bacon Bagel Debate provided plenty of food for thought and gave an insight into how young Jews in the media feel their Jewishness affects their daily lives. The panel did a great job of showing how a spectrum of Jewish observance can happily coexist in today's Britain. There was a lot of audience participation, creating a positive forum for debate."
