Following four days of intensive efforts to control the blaze, the forest fires in the Carmel region of northern Israel have now been extinguished. The worst forest fire in Israel's history has claimed the lives of 41 people and devastated communities, destroying homes, businesses and the natural environment.
It is clear that the short-term needs of the people affected by the fire are being met by the authorities and, on Sunday 5 December, the Israeli government authorised an emergency package to assist and rehabilitate the communities in need.
As is characteristic of Israel in times of crisis, there has been a tremendous outpouring of support for victims of the fire from across the country, including NGOs and youth movements who have been working with local people, in addition to the commercial sector and the philanthropic community.
In line with advice from the Israeli authorities, UJIA is not currently running an emergency appeal for the Carmel Forest fire. We are, however, continuing to monitor the situation closely and will respond to the long-term needs of the region as becomes necessary. UJIA's Director in Israel, Natie Shevel, has joined the National Emergency Authority (RACHEL) as part of the group of NGOs working in cooperation with the Civil Defence Authorities.
Our thoughts remain with the citizens of Israel who have been affected by the fire and we wish them and their communities a speedy recovery.
