Students from in and around London took part in UR UNI LIFE, a seminar to help Jewish Sixth Formers get the most out of their time at university. UR UNI LIFE, the first event of its kind, was run by UJIA JAMS (Jewish Activities in Mainstream Schools) in partnership with AJ6 and the Union of Jewish Students and took place at the UJS Hillel Student Centre in Euston (Sunday 13 March 2011).
Sessions on the day covered a range of aspects about university life including being Jewish on campus, a discussion on "what's your Israel?", CV and interview skills, as well as a "Ready, Steady, Cook" pizza demonstration.
Anthony Ashworth-Steen, UJIA JAMS Education Manager, commented:
"University can be one of the best times of your life. But moving away from home, friends and family is a big change too. So we're thrilled that so many Sixth Formers took part to get the low-down on uni life and learn how to make their transition as smooth as possible.
"We planned to have 25 people attend the event and I am delighted that we not only met it, but surpassed that total. To have such a mix of attendees from Jewish and non-Jewish schools in and outside of London was a testimony to all the hard work put in by the team."
Here's what some of the participants had to say:
"Speaking to people who have been through the uni experience and hearing how they got involved in Jewish life was extremely valuable. Each speaker had an interesting story and they were so willing to offer advice." (Jodie, a pupil at the Royal Masonic School for Girls.)
"I learnt about time management which fits into uni life more than I first realised. I also learnt about preparing for interviews which was really interesting." (Adam, Hasmonean High School.)
"From the information we received at UR UNI LIFE, we have organised a follow-up session for the entire J-Soc in our school." (Lauren, Mill Hill County)
"It was very interesting to find out what Jewish life at uni is actually like." (Emily, JFS)
