Event raises £148,000 to give young people a 'sporting chance' in life
Over 400 people, including sporting stars past and present, attended UJIA's annual Sports Dinner and Quiz at north London's Emirates Stadium on Wednesday 21 March 2011. Guests raised £148,000, an increase from last year, to support UJIA's educational programmes across the UK and northern Israel's Galil region.
The event, organised by UJIA's Sports Group and sponsored by BDO, was compered by Sky Sports' favourite Jim White. Guests tested their knowledge with a sporting quiz and bid in an auction for memorabilia and prizes including:
• Two hours coaching for a school football team by West Ham manager Avram Grant
• Trip to Tottenham Hotspur's training ground to watch Harry Redknapp put his first team through their paces
• A behind the scenes tour of Sky Sports during a Saturday broadcast.
Celebrity guests at the event included:
• Gary Mabbutt MBE, one of football's best-known defenders who fought diabetes to appear more than 600 times for Tottenham Hotspur
• Alan Mullery MBE, former Spurs and England player who famously marked Pele out of 1970 World Cup
• Mark Schwarzer, goalkeeper for Fulham FC and the Australian national team.
Craig Fisher, chair of the UJIA Sports Group, said: "It was a great night for a great cause and it was amazing to see so many people attending their first UJIA event. The atmosphere in the room was electric thanks to Sky Sports' Jim White who once again did a fabulous job hosting our sports quiz."
