A group of over 60 Israeli teenagers brought a magical week to Jewish communities across the UK in the run-up to Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut (Thursday 5-Wednesday 11 May 2011). The 15-17 year-olds were delegates with UJIA magic moments, a unique programme that connects young Israelis with British Jews.
Eleven communities across the country hosted the Israelis from UJIA's partnership region, the Galil in northern Israel, giving them the chance to experience Jewish life in the Diaspora. The highlight of the week were the inspiring Yom Hazikaron ceremonies, lead by the Israeli delegates to mourn the Israeli war dead and victims of terror. Their action packed-itinerary included tea with Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks, meeting residents at the Ravenswood centre for people with learning disabilities, and volunteering with youth movements and students at JCoSS. The week ended on a high with festive Yom Ha'atzmaut parties.
Adrienne Cinna, UJIA magic moments programme co-ordinator, said:
"Each spring the UJIA magic moments delegation has a profound impact on the Jewish community in the UK - and this year was no different. The young Israeli ambassadors came with a sense of mission to promote the spirit of Israel and formed lasting relationships with British Jews, creating magical memories for all."
