Kibbutz Eshbal lies at the centre of the Upper Galil. Uniquely, education is the focus of employment for its members. The kibbutz was founded in 1998 and with its commitment to education and social values, has initiated a unique boarding school programme.
Established in April 2000, the school is designed specifically for at-risk youth, many of whom were living on the street and had been expelled from the educational system. Today, "Eshbal Youth Society" caters for 40 students on a residential basis, many of whom come from Israel's Ethiopian immigrant community. This programme allows the youth, aged 15 to 18, to bridge gaps in their education and graduate from school, many with distinction. Members also take party in a variety of social activities, gaining a sense of social responsibility and empowerment.
In addition to running the school, members of Kibbutz Eshbal provide daily educational programmes for disadvantaged youth from the Galil's diverse Jewish and non-Jewish communities.
Kibbutz Eshbal reaches approximately 4,000 children and teenagers each week. UJIA's commitment enables Kibbutz Eshbal to transform the lives of these young people through its innovative educational activities. The success of Eshbal shows that - like other UJIA-supported initiatives - the Galil is a place for outstanding people, organisations and programmes that can compete with and show the way to the best.
