Severe budgetary constraints have limited the Israeli school day to morning hours only. Working parents are forced to pay for afternoon programmes to occupy their children for these hours. While middle class families can afford these costs, this programme provides after-school educational enrichment for children in the Galil, together with a hot meal, providing an invaluable service for low-income families.
The programme supports the school curriculum by providing invaluable support in both core subjects and enrichment programmes, including computer skills, English, environmental studies, art, music, communications and Torah enrichment. Some children also receive a hot lunch which for many is their only hot meal of the day.
Stimulating enrichment programmes can both bolster underprivileged pupils' academic achievement and prevent high school students from dropping out of school. They also help to build the children's self-esteem and confidence, whilst creating a positive attitude towards school and personal development. Top educational providers implement the programme in cooperation with local authorities.
UJIA is a major supporter of this programme. To affirm their commitment to the programme, parents (except in the most needy circumstances) also make contributions to the cost of the programme.
