All state-funded schools in the UK are inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). Pikuach, which means "Supervision" in Hebrew, is the the UK Jewish community's response to the government requirement that faith schools have their religious education inspected.
Pikuach sends teams of inspectors into Jewish schools to inspect the Jewish education in the school. The aims and expectations for Jewish education vary widely from school to school. Pikuach enables schools to both evaluate themselves and identify action for development. The inspection process is an opportunity for schools to show inspectors how well they know themselves.
As well as organising and conducting inspections, Pikuach runs training courses for new inspectors and a full professional development programme for its team of 20 inspectors.
Pikuach is jointly sponsored by UJIA and the Board of Deputies.
